Waiting for Love

Waiting for passersby to stop

Waiting for passersby to stop

Last Saturday, my brother came to town for a visit.  We spent Saturday in Union Square doing Love Research together.  He took photos with his new camera and I set up my booth.  The day had a slow start and I spent quite a bit of time waiting for passersby to stop.  The cold weather kept people moving and it took  a long time to do an interview.

But waiting always allows time for meditation.  In order to encourage people to participate I have to find the right balance of energy.  I can’t look to desperate, but I also have to be open for connecting.  Funny, it’s the same way you have to approach love.

Why Him? Why Her?

LOVE, Why do you fall in love with one person rather than another? That’s a good question. Dr. Helen Fisher’s book WHY HIM? WHY HER? explores the science of human attraction.  I’ve been reading her books as part of my ongoing love research, and recently I met her at a reading at the Open Center. She invited members of the audience to visit her LOVE LAB at Rutgers University where she conducts brain scans on people who have fallen in love.  I enthusiastically volunteered but haven’t heard back yet.  I hope she contacts me in the future.  It was such a thrill to meet a true love expert.

Defend Equality-Love Unites

WASHINGTON – My friend Hillevi went this weekend to join the National Equality March and shoot some footage from her documentary. I so wish I would have gone along to do some LOVE RESEARCH. I watched the CNN coverage with all the stirring speeches calling for Equal Rights for gays.  Tens of thousands of gay rights supporters marched on Sunday from the White House to the Capitol, demanding that President Barack Obama keep his promises to end discrimination against gays.

METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
A LOVE TOUR
I went recently on a visit to the Met to look for images of love.  I spent several hours wandering through the floors hunting for romantic images to inspire my heart.  Here are a few pics from my tour.

Love by John Lennon

(click on John Lennon to see the video on Youtube.)

Love is Real.  Real is love.

Love is feeling. Feeling love.

Love is wanting to be loved.

Love is touch. Touch is love.

Love is reaching. Reaching love.

Love is asking to be loved.

Love is you. You and me.

Love is knowing we can be.

Love is free. Free is love.

Love is living.  Living love.

Love is meeting to be loved.

SPREAD LOVE GRAFITTI

Filed under: Where Did You See Love Today? — Tags: — Karen @ 1:56 am

My friend Ian did a beautiful series of photographs.  He took snapshots of love grafitti he encountered walking around New York City’s streets.  He collected quite a few and printed them out as found Valentines for his lovely wife.  I thought they were wonderful and for my birthday this year he gave me a treat–a large format version of ‘I Love You’ scrawled on a gritty wall.

The Art of Loving

On October 7th, my parents celebrated their 42nd Wedding Anniversary.  Growing up they were my first love teachers.  My parents are passionate people and they inspired me to open my heart to embrace the world around me.  Recently I interviewed my mother and father and asked them to name what they love.  Here are the answers that spilled out:

“My partner in life. I love that he is my best friend, confidant, and lover all in one. My family. Watching each amazing child grow. I love hearing them laugh together. I love listening to their ideas. I love that they share so much with us. I love the smell of the earth responding to a spring rain. I love watching green tips of growing plants poke through the dirt. I love poems by Mary Oliver, high billowing skies, flesh tones in different lights, flip-flops, skinny slices, green lemongrass tea, patios, yellow sunlight shining through leaves. I love shadows dancing on the fence, paintings and painting, grandchildren.”

—My Mom

“Time with my family. Travels with my amazing beautiful wife and, when possible, my great family. Warm Mediterranean beaches. Denmark and Ireland, India with friends. Reading books to my nephews, then acting the stories out with them. Enjoying my wife’s ethnic cooking, the many recipes from my mom, or from the children’s recipes. Music to set the mood, live or recorded, especially played or performed by family and friends. Art: poetry, artwork, writings, drawings, paintings, songs, stories, dances, theatre, from family members and friends. Love Research, for its honesty and sensitivity. Family memories and memorabilia, antiques, artwork. The smell of spring gardens, small fuzzy animals, fresh produce from my own gardens . . . ”

John & Yoko

I listened to WNYC last weekend and heard Yoko Ono on Soundcheck talking about her new album, Between My Head and the Sky.  She and John Lennon are some of my biggest love heroes and their artistic collaborations have inspired my own creative work.  In 1969 they formed The Plastic Ono Band  and today the 76-year-old Ono is re-launching the band with the help of her son, Sean Ono Lennon.

My favorite song on the new album is “Unun. To.” In this song she recites, “Life becomes like a lover you have been close to / You know him so well and yet every day he gives you a surprise / When you say I love you, remember you are not just saying it to the one you love / you are saying to yourself, the planet and the Universe.”
