I'm Karen Sorensen

I'm a writer and performer

I'm a writer and performer who has dedicated the last five years of my life to researching love. I set up my public booth on city streets and invite participants to answer questions about love in exchange for flowers. To date I have interviewed hundreds of people in New York City from all walks of life.

Raised in Wisconsin

Raised in Wisconsin, I now live in New York City where I am a member of OVO, an arts collective committed to the development of original artworks. In 2002, OVO gave me funding to start Love Research. Originally conceived as a theatrical production and a preparation for marriage, I spent six months on NYC streets asking people questions about love and recording their answers. The performance at Collective Unconscious wove the best of my recorded street interviews into a personal narrative about my own search for the meaning of love. This led to invitations to perform at Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, The Culture Project, Art in General, Socrates Sculpture Park and PS122. As interest in the project grew and my collection of audio interviews expanded I began work on a book to publish my love findings.

I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and received a B.A. in Theater, followed by a M.F.A. in Performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I developed numerous original performances. My work ranged from theatrical productions to one-woman shows, from performance art spectacles to gallery installations.

Love Research continues to evolve

Love Research continues to evolve through ongoing street interviews, scholarly investigations into the nature of love, and through performances and public appearances. For the next stage of my project, I would like to travel around the world to explore the subject of love internationally. Currently I am actively looking for a literary agent and publisher.
